Malcolm West is all too familiar with the notion of service and charity. After several years of serving in the military, Malcolm devotes much of his time to serving his community. He volunteers with several organizations in the Lehigh Valley, including Valley Heath Partners (VHP).
Malcolm’s dedication to VHP’s programs and clinics began through volunteer work with VHP Veteran Health Program and later VHP Street Medicine. He also serves as a board member for The Lehigh Conference of Churches.
“I was a soft veteran, with a desk job. I had an easy life. I knew others were going through difficulties,” and ultimately, he wanted to help. “I wanted my time spoken for,” Malcolm says when asked why he spends so much time volunteering.
After the passing of his wife, Malcolm found purpose in “being useful by helping those who have less,” he says. In addition to donating his time, when he can, he also donates resources. He recently donated funds for a much needed autorefractor. This machine is used during an eye exam to provide a measurement of a person’s prescription for glasses or contact lenses. This will allow VHP Street Medicine patients to receive eye exams in encampments or shelters.
Malcolm’s generosity and commitment to community service mirror VHP’s core values. We are grateful to those like Malcolm, who give back to their community so selflessly.
